Downtown
Downtown San Francisco is quite large.  It is divided into the following districts:
  • Financial District and Jackson Square (east of Kearny to the Embarcadero)
  • South of Market
  • Market Street (from the Embarcadero to Van Ness)
  • Chinatown and Portsmouth Plaza (Grant Ave. and Kearny St.)
  • Nob Hill
  • Union Square
  • Tenderloin and Theater District, excluding Civic Center area
  • Polk Street and Van Ness Avenue
  • Civic Center and adjacent arts district

MUNI Metro station, Market at Van Ness
Street cars were replaced by light rail trains in the 1980s.  Downtown, the Metro is a subway.  In the western residential districts, it becomes a surface train.  MUNI has preserved one street car line as a historic attraction, the F-Line shown above.  It travels from Market and Castro to Fisherman's Wharf via the Embarcadero.
