MUNI Metro station, Market
at Van Ness
Street cars were replaced
by light rail trains in the 1980s. Downtown, the Metro is a subway.
In the western residential districts, it becomes a surface train.
MUNI has preserved one street car line as a historic attraction, the F-Line
shown above. It travels from Market and Castro to Fisherman's Wharf
via the Embarcadero.
